How Does It Work?
It's simple. The 500 Mbps Ethernet Adapter Kit uses your home electrical lines to create a high-speed network throughout your home, giving devices like high-definition televisions, Blu-ray players, and gaming consoles access to the Internet.
Why Is Powerline Better than Wireless Networking?
There are some distinct advantages to powerline networking. First, powerline products produce more consistent transmissions. You won't see the kind of fadeouts and connection drops you often experience with wireless networks. Second, powerline networking works in places where wireless can't. Powerline gives you a strong, reliable network connection throughout your electrical system, whether connecting into a concrete basement or throughout a large home.
The 500 Mbps Ethernet Adapter Kit contains everything you need to create the fastest Powerline home network available, and it sets up in minutes.

Easy setup with excellent performance
Very easy to setup and the performance is good enough to stream live TV HD content from my Windows media center to an Xbox 360 media extender. I have these adapters plugged into different electrical circuits at opposite ends of the house and everything appears to work well even under those circumstances.
I did notice that the adapters "Link" light didn't start off Green and the instructions didn't mention what the various other colors meant. The "Link" lights appear to alternate from Green to Red in my house but streaming HD videos (Netflix, HBO Go, or HD recordings) didn't appear to have any noticeable skips, lag or connectivity issues.
Online support FAQ shows the following for the "Link" light:
Red: Indicates weak signal and slower network speed: less than 50Mbps
Orange: Indicates normal signal with standard network speed: 50-99Mbps
Green: Indicates excellent signal with optimal network speed: 100Mbps+
Off: Indicates no activity. And...

Low link speed under ideal conditions, poorly documented
I bought the ActionTec 500 mbps Power Line Networking Kit from a brick and mortar vendor for $49.99 in August 2012. I have used multiple power line networking kits in the past. While I have never seen any of these systems live up to their "theoretical" billing, I have had a few that delivered acceptable performance, Netgear being an example. I purchased the Actiontec 500 mbps kit by rationalizing that even if I only ever got 75-80 mbps out of it, that would be enough for my application (15 foot run between 2 rooms).
My initial impression was that the Actiontec units appeared reasonably well made and were significantly smaller than other units I had used. Upon plugging them in all of the indicator lights appeared to be working although I was only ever able to get a low speed (red < 50 mbps) connection between them while they were on the same circuit. I decided to see how much of an impact distance was having on their performance so I connected them both the same...
Good product but limited by 10/100 Ethernet Port.
I purchased this at my local store to try them out and avoid having to wire my condo for gigabit Ethernet. Installation was easy as everyone describes, plug and play. One adapter was connected to my WRT610N gigabit router to which my home server connects to.
The other was connected to a power outlet in the living room and directly to a laptop. Link light was green.
Doing a file copy from my server running a 7200RPM WD Black HD to the laptop i was getting 8-9 MEGABYTES (~72mbps) constant. Max theoretical transfer rate of a 100mbps LAN is 12.5 Megabytes per second, but 8-9MB is actually close to the max due to overhead, so basically i was maxing out the 10/100 port. For comparison, my 5GHZ Wireless N transfer speed is about 7-8 Megabytes. ( Server inside closet, + 1 drywall. Total of about 20 feet point to point.)
What is the point of having it rated at 500mpbs if the maximum input / output is limited to 100 mpbs? For most users this won't matter since...
